I really don't know why the Japanese hold Anne of Green Gables as a bit of odd intrigue.
I grew up in the area which she is based and they get mostly Japanese tourists.

The 1979 anime version (supervised by Isao Takahata of Ghibli fame) was fairly popular in the land of the rising sun.
Well that is only part of the explanation, Wikipedia tells us that:

Anyone knows if this series will get fully subbed by one of the groups?, cause in this batch after some episodes the subs have some serious misspellings or just plain weird words in it, in episode 19 it actually mentioned "Like a barbie doll" as a sub
