How does it compare to the h.264 DVDrip that's floating around?

I'm not in any hurry; as usual I've got a huge back-log of unwatched titles at the moment. But I've been keeping an eye on this since the day it went up. Looks like it could be epic, or not so much, but definitely looks pretty unique and very interesting. I'm hoping it leans toward the Epic.

Checking it out again just now, wanted to leave a note of Thanks! for the offer, and let you know it's got a strong vote of interest from me for when it does finally get approved. Whatever best quality you can eek out of it, will definitely be appreciated.
Arigatou!

I will offer a new version in a few minutes. I removed Russian fandub from the Russian rip and replaced it with English subs. The other H264 rip listed in AniDB is still nowhere to be found: its only seed in eMule is dead now

I hate to ask for playback assistance like this, but... as I assume other people aren't having any issues, I am just at a complete loss. The Russian srt track will load and display fine, but the English one is completely blank. I am running MPC + CCCP at standard settings (save for a few adjustments that wouldn't impact sub display in the least). Again, I simply cannot manage to get English subs to appear. I really don't get it. I have never had any difficulties with vobsub display in the past.
Any advice offered would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
EDIT: If it matters, I am running Windows 7 64bit

I have a similar issue in MPC-HC and Zoom Player (with K-Lite v.8.4). However, VLC Player and KMPlayer work fine. IIRC, it also worked with K-Lite v.7.9.

Lovely movie but, will it be possible to include a SRT file for the English subtitles?

There are several versions of SRT subs here: http://subs.com.ru/page.php?id=11813
However, you'll have to retime them for this rip of the movie.

'Kay ... well, I'm not having any luck. I ran into this a couple months back and forgot about it until tonight.
The file as D/L'd doesn't display EN or JP vobsubs, but embedded SRT RU are fine. Grabbed the alternate versions from that link and unpacked the *.rar into its sub-folder. As expected, no go. Copied everything into the root folder for the *.mkv file ... nothing. Methodically went through each file and renamed it to exactly match the name of the *.mkv file ... nothing.
Using MPC-HC, set up exactly as described in these links:
- http://haruhichan.com/wpblog/index.php/263/madflac-setup-guide.html
- http://afternoonnapsempire.org/subtitle-renderer-matters/
- http://code.google.com/p/xy-vsfilter/#Install (latest xy-VSfilter 3.0.0.8 stable)
I switched between madVR, Haali, EVR Custom & VMR-9 (renderless) in the Output. No joy. According to the setup in the links above, I should have Auto-load subtitles unchecked under Playback; have tried it on and off several times with various other options. The same setup guides have DirectVobSub & DirectVobSub (auto-loading version) External filters registered and set to Prefer.
I'm kinda stumped as to what else to try. Any advice for settings I should be looking at ..? Options to tweak? Filters to enable/disable ..?
I've never stripped the subs out of a video container before. Would it be a good strategy to try & strip them out of this file and use them externally? The timing should then be correct, if they work. How would I go about that ..?
Thanks! From watching parts of the video while trouble-shooting, I want to see this even more, now. Nice animation and some interesting scenes.
[ EDIT: 'Kay. Thanks. I'll play around with it some more another night. 4:00 a.m. here right now & just wanted some light entertainment to wind down & catch some sleep. Same thing as happened last time. Just don't have it on me to think right now. ]

To extract subtitles from the container, you can use MKVToolnix + MKVCleaver.
If nothing else helps, try using VLC Player instead of MPC-HC.
